Using an Epidemiological Approach to Critically Analyze a Population Health Issue

You will develop your Major Assessment for this course by completing sections of a paper that, when combined, will be 12–15 pages long and in which you examine a health problem of interest to you and apply an epidemiologic approach.

You will submit sections of your paper as Assignments 2, 3, and 4 in Weeks 6, 8, and 9. This will enable you to receive feedback from the Instructor and incorporate this feedback as you craft your final 12- to 15-page paper (Major Assessment 7). The Final Paper is due by Day 3 of Week 11. This paper will serve as your Major Assessment for this course.

Assignment 1: Selecting a Population Health Problem
As you know, promoting positive social change is a part of the Walden mission. To be an effective agent for social change, nurses must be able to logically and critically analyze population health issues using epidemiologic concepts, and then communicate insights in a succinct and professional manner. This exercise will afford you such an experience.

This week, you will complete Assignment 1 in preparation for Major Assessment 7, in which you will apply epidemiologic principles and develop an intervention for a health problem.

For this Assignment, you will examine a health problem of interest to you, and you will develop a brief paper (1–2 pages) outlining the significance of the health problem and describing it in terms of person, place, and time. This outline will help your Instructor determine if the topic you selected is appropriate for the Major Assessment paper.

Prepare for Assignment 1 as follows:

Review the Major Assessment Overview.
Determine a population health problem that is viable for completing this paper. You may use the problem you identified in the Week 1, 2, or Week 3 Discussion, or you may select a new one.
Determine the characteristics of the health problem in terms of person, place, and time.
Using the Walden Library and credible websites, conduct additional research on your selected population health problem. Consider the significance of this health problem.
Examine how Healthy People 2020, listed in the Learning Resources, supports the importance of addressing your selected health problem.
Develop a preliminary research question or hypothesis appropriate for your topic.
To complete:

Write a 1- to 2-page paper that addresses the following:

Describe the population health problem in terms of person, place, and time.
From the primary research literature and Healthy People 2020, briefly explain the significance of this health problem.
Include your preliminary research question or hypothesis.
By Day 7
Submit your 1- to 2-page paper in order to receive feedback on your topic

Assignment 2: Defining the Problem and Research Methods
Sections 1 and 2 of Major Assessment 7: Using an Epidemiological Approach to Critically Analyze a Population Health Problem

In Week 3, you identified a population health problem of interest to you for Assignment 1. With your Instructor’s approval, you will use this problem for the Major Assessment 7 paper, which is due by Day 3 in Week 11. This week, you will begin Assignment 2 (Sections 1 and 2 of the Major Assessment 7 paper).

Through having already identified a population health problem of interest (Assignment 1) and by exploring different types of research designs in Discussion 2 of this week, you will continue to develop and refine your initial thoughts as you explore these concepts in more depth. As you work on Sections 1 and 2 of the Major Assessment 7 paper, you will also consider assessment strategies you could utilize based on your research design and methods for collecting raw data.

Review the Major Assessment Overview. Then, begin developing Section 1 and Section 2, which are due by Day 7 of Week 6:

Section 1: The Problem

A brief outline of the environment you selected (i.e., home, workplace, school)
A summary of your selected population health problem in terms of person, place, and time, and the magnitude of the problem based on data from appropriate data resources (Reference the data resources you used.)
Research question/hypothesis
Section 2: Research Methods

The epidemiologic study design you would use to assess and address your population health problem
Assessment strategies (i.e., if you were conducting a case-control study, how would you select your cases and controls? Regarding the methods and tools you would use to make these selections, how is it convenient for you as the researcher or as the investigator to use this tool?)
Summary of the data collection activities (i.e., how you would collect data—online survey, paper/pen, mailing, etc.)
You do not need to submit anything this week. Assignment 2 is due by Day 7 of Week 6.

Assignment 2: Defining the Problem and Research Methods
Sections 1 and 2 of Major Assessment 7: Using an Epidemiological Approach to Critically Analyze a Population Health Problem

How do culture and environment influence health? What role does personality play in health outcomes? How do stressful life events influence disease? As a health care professional, you have most likely witnessed the influence of psychosocial factors on individual health. These factors also have a significant impact on population health. Chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease, as well as degenerative diseases, can be studied at the population level through the use of epidemiologic methods (Friis, 2021). The insights gained from this type of research can then positively impact health outcomes locally, nationally, and globally.

As you continue working on Assignment 2, which is due by Day 7 of this week, consider how psychosocial factors influence your population and population health issue.

To complete:

In 5–6 pages, write the following sections of your paper:

Assignment 3: Developing an Intervention and Determining the Impact
Sections 3 and 4 of Major Assessment 7: Using an Epidemiological Approach to Critically Analyze a Population Health Problem

Measures of effect are especially important for quantifying health problems. As a DNP-prepared nurse engaged in advanced practice, understanding how to interpret the statistical data in research studies enables you to better present your own findings as well as to determine appropriate interventions based on the data.

This week, you will begin Assignment 3, Sections 3 and 4 of the Major Assessment 7 paper. For Section 3, you will outline an intervention for your population to address the health problem based on the research literature. As you review the literature, it is essential to critically evaluate each study, including the statistical analysis and outcomes. To further enhance your analysis, select a causal model that applies to your selected population health problem, and consider it in terms of measurement of effect. Utilize this model as you continue to evaluate the literature that supports your proposed intervention (Section 3 of your paper).

Review the Major Assessment Overview. Then, begin developing Section 3 and Section 4, which are due by Day 7 of Week 8:

Section 3: The Intervention

An outline of an intervention you would implement to address the population health problem with your selected population based on the results of the study in Section 2 (Note:If you selected a descriptive study design, you are still required to outline an intervention that might be developed based on future research.)
A review of the literature that supports this intervention
Section 4: The Impact

An explanation of the health outcome you would be seeking and the social impact of solving this issue

Assignment 3: Developing an Intervention and Determining the Impact
Sections 3 and 4 of Major Assessment 7: Using an Epidemiological Approach to Critically Analyze a Population Health Problem

Assignment 3, begun in Week 7, is due by Day 7 of this week.

To complete:

In 5–6 pages, write the following sections of your paper:

Section 3: The Intervention

An outline of an intervention you would implement to address the population health problem with your selected population based on the results of the study in Section 2 (Note:If you selected a descriptive study design, you are still required to outline an intervention that might be developed based on future research.)
A review of the literature that supports this intervention
Section 4: The Impact

An explanation of the health outcome you would be seeking and the social impact of solving this issue

Assignment 4: Planning for Evaluation
Section 5 of Major Assessment 7: Using an Epidemiological Approach to Critically Analyze a Population Health Problem

DNP-prepared nurses are expected to effectively use research methods to analyze data, “design evidence-based interventions, [and] predict and analyze outcomes…,” (AACN, 2006, p. 11).

Every research design requires you to evaluate your results. Epidemiologic studies are no different. In Week 7, you explored how using causal models can assist with evaluating the data analysis section of a study. In this week’s Discussion, you explored how epidemiological data are used to substantiate or negate the need for screening programs; evaluation is critical to ensure the data are sound and suitable as the basis for such decisions. As these experiences demonstrate, if the results of a study are not evaluated, they cannot be used to improve population health.

As you begin working on Assignment 4, Section 5 of the Major Assessment 7 paper, consider how you would evaluate the anticipated results of your population health intervention developed in Sections 3 and 4 of Assignment 4. As noted in the AACN Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice, as a DNP-prepared nurse, you are expected to predict and analyze outcomes and then design evidence-based interventions based on your analysis. This Assignment provides you with an opportunity to practice that skill.

Begin developing Section 5, which is due by Day 7 of Week 9.

Review the Major Assessment Overview.
Review Exhibit 8–7: The Four Stages of Evaluation on page 350 of Epidemiology for Public Health Practice. In addition, review the articles in the Learning Resources that describe program evaluation in various settings.
Section 5: Evaluation

An evaluation plan based upon the health outcome that you have chosen and your anticipated results

Assignment 4: Planning for Evaluation
Section 5 of Major Assessment 7: Using an Epidemiological Approach to Critically Analyze a Population Health Problem

Assignment 4: Evaluation is due by Day 7 of this week. Please refer to Week 8 for complete instructions.

To complete:

In 2–3 pages, write the following section of your paper:

Section 5: Evaluation

An evaluation plan based upon the health outcome that you have chosen and your anticipated results
