Instructions action plan
Part of being an effective and ethical human services professional is advocating for our clients and communities. According to the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS), “human services practitioners and agencies are committed to helping people and communities reach their potential through empowering change and transformation. Human services practitioners work to impact change at all levels within the communities where they work. Also, they strive to facilitate long-term, transformative change for those they serve.” In addition, Standard 16 of the NOHS Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals requires that we “advocate for social justice and seek to eliminate oppression” (See https://www.nationalhumanservices.org/ethical-standards-for-hs-professionals (Links to an external site.)).
The purpose of this assignment is to identify and explore a social justice issue (e.g., immigration policy, environmental justice, Islamophobia, maternal mortality, sexual assault), how this issue affects various communities, and how human services professionals can support these communities and advocate for change. Choice of the topic needs to be approved by the professor.
Include the following information in your paper:
Title page in APA style
Social Justice Issue (formally and previously incarcerated people’s rights is the topic for this paper)(2-3 pages)
Identify the issue that is the focus of the paper. Present a concise overview and explain the importance of addressing this issue. Summarize existing research or scholarship on this topic, and articulate the importance of addressing this issue.
Identify the community/cultural group(s) who are impacted by this issue. Minority groups such as Blacks Hispanics and women.
Include data on the prevalence of this problem for this population. Use relevant peer-reviewed resources and official documents and reports (e.g., census data and statistics, etc.) to illustrate the problem(s) the community is facing.
Discuss intersectionality. How does the experience of this issue vary by gender, race/ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, disability, or other aspects of identity.
Intervention and Action/Advocacy (1-2 pages)
From the peer-reviewed literature, identify and describe at least one intervention that will be helpful in working with this community/cultural group and the problem(s) it is facing. (If the intervention was not specifically designed for this cultural group, discuss ways that you would modify the intervention so that it is culturally competent.)
Discuss how human services professionals can address this issue and promote change (advocate for social justice and combat oppression). Note that action can take different forms. Examples of action steps are calling/writing to elected officials, starting/signing a petition, volunteering, consuming consciously, donating, spreading awareness, staying informed and educating yourself further. Be specific on what action we can take to advocate on this issue.
Conclusion (1 paragraph)
Discuss your personal reactions to writing this paper. What impact did the information have in you? How will you use what you learned moving forward?
References can include articles from peer-reviewed journals (at least one), as well as news articles, websites, or books/book chapters. Be sure to include references page at the end of your paper.
