Academic Paper

Instructions

For the academic paper, you will select a topic regarding a nursing issue or trend to discuss in terms of its actual or potential impact on nursing practice, nursing education, and/or nursing research. The focus of the topic must relate to the profession rather than a standalone health topic or nursing role. Examples of appropriate topics include:

  1. Submit your choice of three (3) topics via e-mail to the instructor. The instructor will approve one topic from your choices.

  1. Conduct a literature search using a minimum of two online library databases, specific to health care and nursing e.g. CINAHL, HealthSource, or Proquest for peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last three (3) years on your topic. The CSUDH nursing and health sciences databases portal is located at http://library.csudh.edu/materials/DBSubjects.php?subject=nursing

Your reference list must include a minimum of three (3) peer-reviewed articles published within the past three (3) years. Additional references (e.g. older articles, web-based sources) may be included in the reference list.

  1. Prepare a Draft of your paper. See the sample draft paper (located in the APA Resources folder – link is on the lefthand main menu in Bb). A draft following the format below is required; students cannot submit a “final completed” paper at this stage. The draft paper is worth 5 points.

  1. Title page

  1. A strong introductory paragraph stating the focus of the paper, why the topic is important, and key points to be discussed in the paper.

  1. Outline of the content of your paper

  1. An APA formatted reference list based on the introductory paragraph and outline (source material you intend to use in your paper).

  1. Do not submit this Draft to Turnitin. Only the paper when fully written will be checked for plagiarism.

  1. The instructor will provide feedback on the draft relative to APA format, introduction, planned content (from your outline), and reference list.

  1. Based on the feedback received develop your final paper; a four to six (4-6) page paper (not including cover and reference page), in APA format following the outline submitted in your draft and any instructor comments. Refer to the sample final paper (located in the APA Resources folder – link is on the lefthand main menu in Bb).

  1. Use headings to organize your paper following APA format for different levels of headings (section 3.02 – 3.03 of the APA manual). Your outline can help point out natural locations in the paper for headings. Headings help with organization and cue the reader to transitions in your paper.

  1. Review the assignment description again and the scoring rubric for guidance with this assignment. The scoring rubric is enclosed below (zoom this document to 150% to view it better). Be sure to focus on the core objective of the assignment: Discuss the actual or potential impact of your topic on nursing practice, education, and/or research.

  1. Use the Academic Integrity Checklist to review your work on the paper. Type in your name as an electronic signature (preceded by the symbol /s/ which denotes signature), and date at the bottom of the form. Copy and paste it to the end of your paper.

  1. Once you have everything assembled into your document (title page, paper, references, and the Academic Integrity Checklist, then you will submit your paper to the plagiarism checker called Turnitin. Use the Turnitin link on the left menu and select “Academic Paper.”

  1. Review the Originality Report and make revisions to your paper (if necessary) so that there are no areas that match source material (e.g. text that has been copied). To receive a passing score on this assignment you must have an acceptable Turnitin report. Feel free to make several revisions, if needed, to achieve an acceptable report. NOTE: you may resubmit as many times as you wish before the due date; however a delay will occur before processing of the Originality Report for resubmissions. Resubmission files and Originality Reports will overwrite the previous submitted files/reports.
  2. Click on the GradeMark tab within the Turnitin report to see the electronic grammar check results.

  1. The academic paper is worth a significant percentage of your grade. You are strongly encouraged to submit your paper to a fellow class member for peer-review prior to submitting the final paper to the instructor. Extra credit of 2 points will be given if you have a peer review done.
    1. Peer review materials are located in the Writing Resources folder.
    2. Request a peer review from a classmate of your choice. Once that person has agreed, e-mail your paper to them via Blackboard (Tools > Email)
    3. Completion of the peer review process involves incorporation of peer comments into the final revision of your paper.
    4. To receive the extra credit, you must include the peer review form with peer comments and submit via the link “Peer Review” in the Academic Paper module.

General Instructions for Writing Your Academic Paper

  1. Length: It is important to keep your paper to 4-6 pages of text. This does NOT include the cover and the reference pages. Papers that are too long or too short will be graded lower than those that stay within the established range.
  2. Organization of material: The content should be organized in logical progression, with a strong introductory paragraph and purpose (thesis) statement and how that purpose is to be achieved. The introduction should state the focus of the paper, why the topic is important, and key points to be discussed in the paper. A conclusion is to be identified in the last paragraph, summarizing the major points made in the introduction and body of the paper. Each paragraph should have an introductory statement (topic sentence) followed by explanations and, if appropriate, examples. Sentences should be complete and to the point.

Refer to the writing resources located in the Course Materials section to review important aspects of academic writing. This BSN program is very writing intensive. Time invested now, will pay off in your future courses.

  1. Citations: Your paper should consist of a combination of factual material from respected sources, as well as your own thoughts, interpretations, and conclusions. Failure to adequately cite such sources of information is one of the most common errors made by inexperienced writers. Equally inappropriate is the paper that is comprised of a long series of quotes or factual information, with minimal integration, synthesis, or conclusions by the writer. The paper must cite at least three references from current (published within the last three years) peer-reviewed journal articles. Peer-reviewed journal articles are not “popular” periodicals like newspapers, “generic” web pages, or textbooks. The CSUDH online library databases like CINAHL or ProQuest allow you to search for only peer-reviewed journals. It must also be apparent that you understood the references that you used.
  2. Format of the paper: In accordance with the nursing discipline, the School of Nursing requires that all academic papers follow the publication style of the American Psychological Association (APA). A sample of the School of Nursing adaptation of the APA title page is provided in the sample papers. Also, most instructors do not require the inclusion of an abstract in academic papers.
  3. Editing: All errors involving grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting (space, margins, header, etc.) as well as in-text citations and references in APA format are taken into account in evaluating your paper. You are advised to proofread your paper carefully and use the electronic grammar checker feedback in the GradeMark section of Turnitin.
  4. Copies: Students should retain a personal copy of their submitted paper.
