Nurses can help a patient make immediate and permanent lifestyle behavioral changes by first creating a safe environment where the patient feels comfortable sharing their concerns and can identify the barriers that are affecting their ability to make the change. Once identified, the nurse and patient can systematically begin to address the barriers.

“One key factor in the ability to comply with health education is financial constraints. The individual may not have the resources to pay for medications or a proper diet or may not have transportation to appointments” (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014, p. 220).
