This paper is not a review, and it is not a research paper. You will instead be making comparisons between the essays “Black Men in a Public Space” by Brent Staples and “I Want a Wife” by Judy Syfers Brady. Read each work and identify the underlying social issue each author is discussing in his and her essay. Think about how each of these essays reflect on today’s society. What social biases exist? How do their essays successfully spread their points?

You will make one comparison between the two essays and one contrast between the two essays. The point-of-view should be 3rd-person (just as you used in your research paper).

This paper will have a total of four paragraphs: an introduction, one comparison body paragraph, one contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion.
Make sure to use textual evidence from each of the pieces you are comparing/ contrasting (two quotes) in your body paragraphs.
Throughout the paper, remember to cite the passages (quotes/paraphrases) from the two essays.
Follow all APA conventions. Make sure to include a reference page.

Comparison/Contrast Organization

In the introduction, share basic information about both selected pieces of literature. End with a one-sentence thesis statement that names both pieces of literature, both authors, and provides a meaningful comparison of the two.

DO NOT provide a vague general statement: This paper will show similarities

and differences between these two pieces of literature.

DO provide a detailed one-sentence thesis statement (notice the sentence

structure of Dependent Clause, Independent Clause, which is particularly fitting

for this style of writing).

Even though the themes of “Black Men in a Public Space” by Brent Staples and “I Want a Wife” by Judy Syfers Brady bot discuss negative social expectations, one focuses on the dangers of being a black man interacting with society, whereas the other focuses on gender expectations within marriage.

From this single complex sentence, a great deal of information is

conveyed:

The two pieces of literature – notice that both essays are in quotation marks. Pay attention to APA conventions; Writing Center libguides for help.
The comparison to be made in the paper: the theme
The contrast to be made in the paper: race and gender expectations

In the first body paragraph, directly after the introduction, develop the comparison between the two stories. Start with a clear topic sentence to focus the reader on the main idea – the comparison between the two pieces of literature.

EXAMPLE (using the above sample): Both essays share a theme that focuses on

negative societal expectations.

(Then, develop that main idea, quoting/paraphrasing from each essay and adding

depth of explanation to make your point clear.)

In the second body paragraph, directly after the paragraph about comparisons, develop the contrast between the two stories. Start with a clear topic sentence to focus the reader on the main idea – the contrast between the two pieces of literature.

EXAMPLE (using the above sample): While one focuses on the dangers of being a black man interacting in society, the other essay focuses on gender biases within marriage.

(Then, develop that main idea, quoting/paraphrasing from each story and adding

depth of explanation to make your point clear.)

End with a concluding paragraph that wraps up the paper, including a re-worded thesis statement following the same format used in the introduction (naming the two pieces of literature and the main idea).

The last page should be the reference page for the two pieces of literature.
