Students should use MLA in-text citations in the exam ; these can be a direct quote, paraphrase, or summary.. Students should not over quote, but at the same time, the test is designed in part to evaluate their ability to cite in MLA style. A good rule of thumb is to have 25-35% of the essay come from source material and 65-75% be the student’s own writing and ideas. The exam asks students to use skills taught in English 110/111: use of and credit for sources (through summarizing, quoting, and paraphrasing), handling fact and opinion, writing coherent paragraphs, thinking logically and critically, and assembling a multi-paragraph essay
