Why did the American colonists think the British Parliament was trying to “enslave” them?

Why did the American colonists think the British Parliament was trying to “enslave” them? What was their logic, and how was this hypocritical and ironic? (I’m going to ask that same question again … notice the running theme?) How does this relate to current American attitudes?
