ARH 2050 Exam 2 (100 points) Exam Questions
SECTION 1: Short Answer (8 points each, 40 points total). For each question, please briefly identify the object or work of architecture shown beneath the question. Then, in a short response (about 3 – 4 sentences) please answer the question using the image provided. If you require more detail, please see the corresponding images in the Canvas modules.
1. Identify the image shown here. What sort of response did this work seek to elicit from its viewer? What visual characteristics support this claim?
2. Identify the image shown here. How does this object demonstrate elements of local style AND Roman/classical influences?
3. Identify the image shown here. What was the intended function of this object and how does it relate to larger Christian practices during the period of its creation?
4. Identify the image shown here. What are some of the architectural developments that define this style of architecture? How does it relate to new attitudes about the space of a church?
5. Below is a work of art not covered in class. Please look carefully at the visual elements of this image. From what stylistic period of architecture might this building have come from? What visual elements support this claim?
SECTION 2: Terms (5 points each, 15 points total). Select three terms from the box below. For each term please provide a definition in your own words. Then select an image from those covered in class and tell me how that image relates to or defines the term you selected (1 – 2 sentences). You do not have to include an image, just write the title/artist/period of the work of art. Please only use images covered in class.
Cloisonné Animal Style
Romanesque Pilgrimage Church
Relic Reliquary
Illuminated Manuscript Gospel Book
Flying buttress Rib vaulting
Rose window Book of Hours
Altarpiece
SECTION 3: Compare and contrast (20 points). Write a few paragraphs in which you compare and contrast the two works shown below. Be sure to consider the works’ formal characteristics, historical context, function, subject, patron, etc. Think in particular about how these two works might be compared or understood together. The most successful answers will note simply list the qualities of each work but instead will explore some of the similar themes expressed in these works and what they convey about their respective cultures. Please note that image 1 consists of the interior or the abbey church as well as the modern schematic plan of the surrounding architecture. Image 2 consists of the bottom image only.
SECTION 4: Free response essay (25 points) on patronage. For this essay, you may refer to the images included below or refer to other images from the lectures. Please discuss the ways in which wealthy patrons allowed for different subjects and themes in works of art and architecture. What themes were they interested in? What uses did they have for art? How was their artistic patronage related to changes in society, culture, and economics? How did their needs differ from or relate to those of the church?
In a well-organized essay, please discuss at least THREE images—either those on the screen or any other image discussed in class. Please try to organize your essay with an introduction that summarizes your argument. While you need not answer every question, you should address the questions that are relevant to the images you choose to discuss.
